Prayer Column: April 2020

Crown him Lord of all

They called it corona, so I read, because at first sight (with much lower powered microscopes than are available today), it looked like a crown. Now we can see more clearly we now know better. It has no crown. It looks evil, more like an old naval mine. Our proper response? Shun it!

But there is one whose crown becomes ever clearer the closer you look. Jesus, still the perfect human personification of God, now crowned with glory and honour (Heb 2:7). And our proper response? Draw closer, glorifying and honouring him in our lives as well as our words: adopting his values; trusting his promises to save us by leading us to his Father God to whom we can pray; doing his bidding; and not keeping quiet about it.

A prayer for each week

Almighty God, who holds all things in your all-capable hands, including each of us, whom you have called, through Jesus. Please keep us safe. Amen.

Great God of grace, more merciful than we can grasp, please keep us safe – safely on course through the present crisis, led by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Great God of truth, unsearchable in wisdom, please keep us safe – safe from all the evil which lurks and prowls, seeking to deceive and destroy. Amen.

Merciful Father, who cares for us with tender mercy, please keep us safe – safe in your loving hug, whatever may befall us and our loved ones. Amen.

Your own prayers

Calverley's Young Potters

The children of the Charlie Wesley Craft and Cooking Club, and a couple of Dads too, turned their hand to pottery, when we created the animals that went into the Ark. The figures were air-dried then fired to bisque, and then they were painted and glazed and re-fired. How do you like the results? Charlie Wesley Craft and Cooking Club at Calverley Methodist Church has developed into a group of 3 to 8 year olds (and mums and dads too) who meet on the first Saturday of the month and cook and craft stories from the Bible. Prayer Column - January 2022

The turn of the year As a new year approaches we tend to wonder what lies ahead, hoping always to shake off the past’s bad record and for something better to come, as if hoping could make it so. We wonder about next year because of course we don’t know what lies around the corner (however great the store of human knowledge, and however thorough our Googling). Search as we may, and it’s a royal honour to do so (Prov 25:2), some things are known only to God: times and seasons fixed by his authority are not for us to know (Acts 1:7), for the future is his. This is a time to remind ourselves of God’s omniscience: he does know (Rom 11:33). He knows the plans he has for us – plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us a hope and a future (Jer 29:11). And it’s time to remember also that God is not far-off and aloof, but a loving, heavenly Father who wants a close living relationship with each of us, day by day and breath by breath – he sent Jesus to bring us back to him. So ...
