All, Together in Worship - Update

At a useful meeting that brought together Christians fromacross the denominations in Shipley and Methodists from the Bradford NorthCircuit we agreed that there is both a need and desire for regular inclusiveworship for learning disabled people.

Our next step is to see how this can happen. So, we arelooking out for all sorts of people to join in this service and mission, whichwe hope to present perhaps 4 times a year.

The blessing is that anyone can contribute in many simple andeasy ways. We are especially hoping to hear from people who can offer craft,music, drama and dance.

If you have skills in leading and teaching singing duringworship, ask God if he is leading you to bring your blessing to this group ofhis people.

You could take part by helping with refreshments andpreparing the service. The least and the best you can do is to pray for thisvision.

Join us atthe next meeting at Northcliffe Church.

Sheffield Festival of Preaching

On Saturday 17th March, 2012, Sheffield Cathedral, we're holding an ecumenical Festival titled "Alive to the Word!", in conjunction with The Methodist Church and the Yorkshire Synod of The United Reformed Church. The day will include worship with a sermon - and the rare opportunity to discuss it just after it's been preached! The preacher is Alan Billings. Rev. Dr. Alan Billings is an Anglican Priest, former Director of the Centre for Ethics and Religion at Lancaster University, and a regular contributor to "Thought for the Day" on BBC Radio 4.

The day will run from 10am to 4pm (coffee/tea and buffet lunch will be provided). The cost will be £15.00 per person

Admission
The day is free and you don't need a ticket. Drop in for half an hour or stay all day. We'll be delighted to see you however long you can spend with us. The formal bit - the commissioning - will take place at the end of the day as part of the praise party (so not so formal), and we would be especially glad to see you then.

Children
We would be delighted for you to bring children with you - it wouldn't be Zephaniah if they weren't welcome. If they get a bit bored with all the 'up-front' stuff then they can have a go at painting a plant pot. We'll certainly need them to jump up and down and join in with the actions at the Praise Party. We'll make sure there is a quieter space, with toys, for those with really little ones.

Refreshments
Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be available all day, so you can relax with some cake or nibble a sandwich while listening to John's concert set. A donation towards the cost of these would be appreciated. Alternatively you can take advantage of one of the fine eating establishments around Shipley.

Parking and Travelling
If coming by car during the morning we would advise using the public car park across the road from the rear of the church, as the church car park is rented out until lunchtime. During the afternoon the Church car park is available. For those using satnav, the postcode is BD18 3QY. If coming by train then Shipley Station is about a 5 minute walk away. If travelling by bus, a large number of buses stop at Shipley Market Place, just across the raod from the Church.

I don't know about you but when I go on a journey I am always really excited about getting to the place I am going to and sometimes miss out on the journey itself. This year at ECG we are going to take time to stop and reflect and to look around us at what God is doing in this moment in our lives and our communities - Taking time to listen, look, feel and experience the work and movement of the Spirit in the present age! Jesus was clear about the tension we must hold between the destination of the Journey and taking time with the people along the way. The journey has a conclusion - heaven, but the journey towards can be an exciting and vibrant one. Together lets be refilled, refuelled and reenergised for the journey God has called us to.

At Northcliffe church, Shipley, a recently formedecumenical partnership (URC & Methodist) and as a “new” church we areseeking to establish a regular worship event for people with learningdisability, their families and friends.

Together with Shipley Christians together we are right at thestart of seeking an answer to this calling.

So far the response has been overwhelmingly supportive and itseems there is a need and desire for this to bear fruit.

On Thursday February 9^th at 7.30pm, at NorthcliffeChurch, (formerly Hall Royd Methodist) we are meeting to find out who isinterested in being part of this adventure and how they might be able tocontribute.

Dear Friends

In Jesus' Sermon on the Mount he says, 'In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets'. For so many people this is both common sense and a common courtesy. Yet surely it is more than that. It is a practical way of showing that we care and respect each other as being part of God's family. Jesus calls us to a generous and ethical living. This call to care, is a call that he gives to all, not just a few.

In 'Encircled in Care' it illustrates this. When a young person helps find an older woman's favourite cushion for her comfort during worship, this is an act of caring. When that same woman sits with the distressed mum in the church lounge and holds her hand as she sobs, this is an act of caring. When those involved in working with children and vulnerable adults apply for a CRB check, this is an act of caring. When the property committee take steps to make sure the building is accessible and they provide large print hymn and worship books, this too is a practical expression of the call to care and to "love our neighbour".

In doing all these things, we are living our faith in word and action. Yet sometimes we tend to dismiss it in those terms because it is normal or natural for us. Let us remember that being a disciple of Jesus takes every aspect of our life and therefore even the smallest things are part of discipleship. When we understand this, how thankful we are to God for the very real part we play in his mission, in his purpose, in his world. We are God's people, so let us acknowledge and be thankful for the call to care and rejoice in the gifts God gives us to fulfil this part of our calling.

There will be a training workshop for those involved in Children's ministry and anyone who leads worship where youngers are present on the evening of Friday 14 October, and on Saturday 15 October a morning activity session for 5-11s and an All Age Cool and Crazy Praise Party on the Sunday morning. The training workshop and service are opento everyone; however, please book for the workshop.

For the events on Saturday, priority will be given to Calverley children, but if you contact our children's workshop northkids@bradfordnorth.org.uk before 26 September, places can be booked for youngsters across the circuit.

This is the nearest I've got to a picture of Bradford North: a view across Shipley and Bradford to the higher hills beyond. I wonder how God sees it, from his far greater height, to the depth of every humanheart?

The children trailing home;
Workers making their way;
Householders keeping house;
Elderley resting in care.

All his beloved creation. Each his child of potential in Jesus. As far as the eye can see, and faith can feel, and trust can rely. In Jesus. It's promise - he's Lord. It's challenge - if he's our Lord.

As we face the future as Bradford North Circuit, from Baildon to Thornton, and from Calverley to Harecroft - 18 bodies of witness to the Lordship of Jesus - this promise and challenge come to us afresh. And we must pray his Lordship into a living reality that others can see.

Lord, I know you're standing at Bradford North's door. i can hear your knocking in the vacant seats and absent children, in the emptying coffers and thickening deafness to your word. Please, dear Lord, let me open my door in the name of Bradford North and welcome you in. By your Holy Spirit throw wide aslo my inner doors that have limited you for so long, and cleanse what you find there - taking control and being my Lord, of all that I am and do. fill me with boldness to live to the full for all to see, the new life you promise, to the glory of God in Bradford North Circuit.

They have cut down a number of trees at the rear of the church thinking that as the land is unusable they could let them lie; however, they have been informed by Bradford Council that they must be removed. They estimate the cost for the removal of the trees to be over £2,000; however, so far no one will accept the work.

They have decided, therefore, to form a team to undertake the task and would be grateful for offers of help.

At the request of the Circuit Meeting, a small Strategy Group has been formed and begun its work. The issues that the Strategy Group needs to address are many and most are interwoven with a number of considerations. However, at our first meeting we were convinced of three things. Firstly this is an exciting opportunity to discern God's leading for the whole Circuit. Secondly, that the current situation is not sustainable in the near future and thirdly, that we need to ground all our work in prayer. This is not just the task of the members of the group, but a task for everyone in the whole Circuit. As many people have already said, 'you will need our prayers.'

As we begin our work we need to discern where God is leading us in the next five years. What might the Circuit look like then? What kind of staffing shall we need to fulfill God's calling on us as a Circuit of Local Churches? Where will our churches, manses, centres of work need to be?

These are just some of the questions we face. We have committed to meet every week between now and Easter, in the belief that we will be able to make recommendations to the next Circuit Meeting. This is no small task. Please pray for us, that God will direct our hearts and minds giving us such a clarity of thought that we might truly seek his will for the Bradford North Circuit.

2011 sees the 400th anniversary of the King James' bible. Biblefresh has a vision to reignite and re-enthuse the church in its passion for the Bible.

To support Biblefresh, the West Yorkshire District of the Methodist Church, of which the Bradford North Circuit is a part, has a project "Written by hand, taken to heart". The project will culminate in a Biblefresh Festival in and around the centre of Bradford on 11 June 2011.

Prior to being the Interfaith elations Officer, Joy Barrow taught Religious Studies in London Secondary Schools for 25 years, after which she was Director of the International Interfaith Centre in Oxford.

Joy has been studying Sikhism, and has been actively involved in interfaith dialogue for over 30 years. She has a PhD in Sikh spirituality from Leeds University and, in 2003, was Visiting Fellow at Punjabi University, India.

Joy is particularly interest in Christian-Sikh dialogue. she edited "Meeting Sikhs" for Christians Aware and has contributed to a variety of publications on Sikhism and Interfaith Relations.

Retiring Collection for the Blenheim Project

Reverend Mike Rayson was born and bred in the Outback… no, not the steakhouse, the real outback of South Australia!

After completing his education in tiny rural schools hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds) of miles from the nearest city, Mike went on to a career in the media. After hosting number 1 rated radio programs in rural, regional and metropolitan markets and writing many national radio commercial campaigns, he heeded God’s call, and went on to ministry with the Uniting Church of Australia – an amalgamation of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches;, the third largest denomination in the country.

Mike’s first pastoral role was in the regional town of Port Lincoln, South Australia… where Steve Spielberg filmed the underwater scenes of the movie ‘Jaws’. Full immersion baptism was a health hazard in the region!! Mike also served as Chaplain/Pastor to the local High School of 900 students and 60 staff.

From Port Lincoln, Mike took an appointment to the capital city of South Australia (Adelaide), where he served in 2 parishes – Marion and Seacliff.

With a passion for music infusing his pastoral ministry, and increasing time away from his churches accepting invitations to preach and sing elsewhere, Mike stepped out of fulltime pastoral ministry in 2000 and started Mike Rayson International Ministries, which is partnered with Compassion International. The ministry organization runs under a 13 member board of directors, and a constant prayer team that has members spanning 6 countries.

In 2005, Mike and his wife Amy, and their children Sam, Laura and Oliver, heeded Gods call on their lives and relocated their ministry to the other side of the world – Pleasant View, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville. After 5 years in the South, the family moved to Illinois, where Mike and Amy serve as pastors of St Paul UMC in Brighton.

He has ministered with such people as Anne Graham Lotz—daughter of legendary Christian Evangelist “Billy Graham”; Rev Dr Len Sweet—author and theologian; and has shared the musical stage with Darlene Zschech—composer of the song ‘Shout To the Lord’, legendary guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, and many others.

Good humor, great songs, and most importantly God’s word make up Mike Rayson’s ministry. Through Mike, Jesus is sure to refresh and revive your soul.

Wrose Flower Festival

Wrose Methodist Church will be holding a Flower Festival on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of June.
Light snacks and food will be provided on Saturday between 10am and 4pm.
Food will be provided from 1pm on Sunday, followed by a Songs of Praise service, led by Sarah Jemison, at 4pm.
